How to Easily Remove and Replace Your Dishwasher

Replacing your dishwasher is quite a simple task and doesn’t require a lot of complicated steps in order to do a neat job. Our step-by-step guide shows you how to remove your old dishwasher and replace it with a new one. Let’s have a look at the kind of tools that are required for the job:

Tools and materials required:

  1. Screwdriver
  2. Wrench
  3. Pliers
  4. Screws
  5. Teflon tape

Step 1: Removing the old dishwasher

Removing a dishwasher doesn’t require complicated tools. Most dishwashers come in the standard 24-inch width and you wouldn’t have to alter your cabinet to install a new one. Before starting the process, get some old rugs and cardboard to protect the floor.

A bucket to gather all the water that might drain is also helpful. Turn off the power from the main panel as well as the water supply. Disconnect the drain lines as well as the electrical cords attached to the dishwasher. Once done, unscrew the hinges from the dishwasher door and the cabinet-mounting screws and slide the dishwasher out of its position.

Step 2: Assessing the drain lines

Once the old dishwasher is removed, check all the drain lines that are present in the cabinet. If any of the lines need to be replaced, now is the time to do it. If the dishwasher is really old, it is best to just replace the drain lines as well to prevent future leaks.

Step 3: Preparing the new dishwasher

New dishwashers usually have an insulation layer wrapped around them. It’s best to not remove it. The first step is to remove the bottom panel of the dishwasher and attach the elbow joints to the fill valve and the drain lines. Use a wrench to tighten the joints.

Also, make sure that the joints are taped with Teflon tape to create a water-tight seal. The best configuration is to have the joints face towards the front of the dishwasher so that fill and drain lines can be easily replaced in the future if required.

Step 4: Installing the new dishwasher

Once the configurations are in place, the next step is to reattach the electrical and water supply to the new dishwasher. After attaching the water supply unit, make sure to check for any leakages or loose attachments. When that is done, place the dishwasher right under the cabinet and secure it by fixing the cabinet-mounting screws back.

Once that is done, the new dishwasher would be fixed to the spot. After the installation, run the water back on and check for leaks in the supply lines. If there is a leakage, you will have to fix the connections. Finally, recheck the positioning and you’re done.

Costs involved:

Replacing a dishwasher and installing a new one requires you to spend money on a new dishwasher as well as the cost to install it. The price for a new dishwasher depends on the brand, material, and the functionality it provides.

An average dishwasher will cost you around $380 but more expensive ones can even go as high as $2300. Additionally, a replacement job can cost around another $200. Since dishwashers require plumbing and electricity work, it’s best to call an expert to do the job. They can even provide you with information regarding maintenance and precautions against damage in the future.
